Everything about washing machine RPM

30 April 2025

The RPM (rotations per minute) of a washing machine indicates how many times the drum rotates per minute during the spin cycle. The higher the RPM, the drier your clothes will be after washing.

Most washing machines have a spin speed of 1400 RPM. But there are also models with 1200, 1600 or even 1800 RPM. A higher speed is not always better. It depends on the type of clothes you wash.

Which spin speed is right for your laundry?

Not all fabrics like high spin speeds. Some clothes stay in better shape when the machine spins more slowly. Below is a guide to help you choose the right RPM.

1200 RPM

Do you often wash delicate clothes? A washing machine with 1200 RPM is a good choice. This speed is gentle and helps reduce damage to your clothes. It is perfect for blouses and tops. Some fabrics, like wool and silk, are better washed at 400 to 600 RPM. Most washing machines have special programs for these materials.

A lower spin speed means your laundry will be wetter after washing. Hang the clothes right away to avoid wrinkles. Did you wash a wool sweater or dress? Lay it flat on a drying rack. This stops the fabric from stretching due to the weight of the water.

1400 RPM

For most people, a washing machine with 1400 RPM is the right choice. It dries your clothes well but is still safe for most fabrics.
Perfect for:

  • Cotton clothing
  • Towels
  • Bedding

1600 RPM

Do you wash heavy items like bath towels or duvets and don’t have a dryer? Then 1600 RPM is a smart choice. This speed removes more water, so your laundry dries faster.

Be careful: not all clothes can handle this high speed. They may wear out more quickly. Always adjust the spin speed based on what you are washing.

Is a higher RPM always better?

No. A higher RPM means drier laundry, but also more wear on your clothes. This is especially a problem for delicate items. You may notice loose seams, fabric damage or faster fading of colors.

Also, high speeds often make more noise. Want to wash at night? Check the machine’s noise level in decibels. Some machines are very quiet, even at 1600 RPM.

What to consider when choosing a spin speed

  • Adjustable spin speed
Choose a machine that lets you set the spin speed for each program. That way, you can match the speed to your laundry.
  • Type of laundry
Take a look at your washing routine. Do you wash a lot of cotton, towels and bedding? Then a higher speed helps. For delicate items, a lower speed is better.
  • Budget
Machines with 1600 RPM are often more expensive. Think about whether the shorter drying time is worth the extra cost.
