Our Goal

Homie aims for a cleaner world

Appliances break down faster and are often thrown away. Sustainable alternatives are usually expensive, so many households keep using old, inefficient machines — increasing their environmental impact.

The European Union and the Dutch government aim for a fully circular economy by 2050. That means smarter use of resources, longer product lifespans, and more conscious consumption.

Homie takes it a step further. In collaboration with manufacturers, we’ve developed our own energy-efficient and affordable appliances. With our Homies, we make sustainable machines like washing machines accessible to everyone. Good for the planet and your wallet.

Why Homie

The origin

Homie was founded with one question in mind: how can we encourage more sustainable use of household appliances?

Homie contributes to a circular economy by offering appliances as a service (Product-as-a-Service) and by promoting energy-efficient use. The end user rents the appliance, while Homie remains the owner and responsible for its upkeep.

This means you never have to buy an appliance again. It encourages mindful use, drives manufacturers to design longer-lasting products, and helps reduce both energy consumption and CO₂ emissions — all while extending the lifespan of every appliance.

Our impact

Homie encourages conscious use

Many people don’t realize it, but the biggest environmental impact of a washing machine comes from how it’s used. That’s why we provide insight into your energy use and encourage more efficient habits.

For example, choose a cold or ECO program and you’ll pay less than for hot, energy-heavy washes. This way, we make sustainable laundry easy and affordable.

Social

Clean clothes for everyone

Homie also provides its appliances to people who are having a hard time, because we believe that clean clothes should be available to everyone. We donate washing machines to the Ontmoeting foundation. The Ontmoeting foundation was founded in 1988 in Rotterdam and helps people who are stuck to stand on their own feet again.

Our history

About Homie

Homie was founded in 2018 by Dr. Nancy Bocken, Hidde-Jan Lemstra, and Colin Bom. What began as a sustainable initiative with a full pay-per-use model has grown into a subscription service for household appliances. Today, over 6,500 people use Homie — and we’re continuing to grow steadily.

How we contribute to circularity

1. Slowing the loop
We only offer energy-efficient machines with a long lifespan. We encourage manufacturers to design their appliances to be more economical, durable and easier to repair. By refurbishing and reusing our devices, they last much longer so fewer appliances need to be produced.
2. Influencing sustainable consumption behavior
Research shows that people are willing to choose sustainable options as long as appliances are accessible and affordable.
3. Shared use
Besides the service for individual households, we also focus on the shared use of white goods. In a residential complex you don't need your own washer or dryer. Sharing Homie machines is cheaper and better for the environment because fewer appliances are needed in total.
4. Social contribution
We donate Homie appliances with a still limited appliance life to social services.
5. Closing the loop
Together with Wecycle we recycle parts and old Homie and non-Homie appliances that are no longer usable.
